The story begins with the play tester, known in the program as "player 01", arriving for their first day of work. They are greeted by a cheerful receptionist, who explains that they will be working on the latest virtual reality simulation: Project Machina. She tells the player that their role is to interact with the AI-controlled characters in order to test their interactions and responses, ensuring the best possible user experience. The player is then taken to a small office .
When the player begins the simulation, they find themselves in a peaceful forest clearing surrounded by cherry blossoms. As they walk through the clearing, a girl named Sakura appears.
